KatherinePresident – Katherine Lee

Katherine is in the fifth year of her PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology. Her project focuses on mechanisms of cardiovascular disease and metabolism. As the President of the Western University chapter, she is responsible for informing grad students and post-docs about consulting careers, providing opportunities for networking, and offering business development skills to assist in attaining alternative careers to academia.





CarmenVice-President – Carmen Leung

Carmen is a PhD candidate in the Department of Physiology & Pharmacology and Collaborative Program in Developmental Biology. Her research is aimed at understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of congenital heart defects. As Vice-President of the Western chapter, Carmen is involved in many aspects of the GMCA, including event organization and planning, communications and building and maintaining relationships with GMCA Canada. In her spare time, Carmen enjoys being outdoors, playing ultimate frisbee and soccer, photography and travelling.





SafeeDirector of Finance – Safee Mian

Currently in the third year of the Doctoral program at Western in the Department of Biochemistry, Safee is working on elucidating the structure and function of the mitochondrial protein Stomatin-Like Protein 2. Outside of the lab, he is very involved within the department of Biochemistry, Western and the London community at large. He is the chair of the Biochemistry Social Committee and a member of the Graduate Studies committee. During his time as an undergraduate at Western, he helped create and manage multiple clubs to enhance student experience. As well, Safee helps to coach the Ramblers U13 boy’s competitive basketball team as an assistant coach every fall and winter season.





JamesDirector of Professional/Member Relations – James Hutchenreuther

James is a Physiology PhD candidate at the University of Western Ontario.  His research focuses on how the tissue surrounding a melanoma tumour affects its spread and growth.  As Director of Professional/Member Relations, James is responsible for management of local GMCA members and developing industry partnerships on behalf of the GMCA.





SamDirector of Events – Samantha Medwid

Samantha is a PhD candidate in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. Her research focuses on the effects of environmental toxins on adrenal gland steroidogenesis. As Director of Events, Samantha is responsible for planning and organizing GMCA events to make them run smoothly. In her spare time, she enjoys yoga, reading and traveling.





AndeaDirector of Communications – Andrea Di Sebastiano

Andrea is currently a postdoctoral fellow studying the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s disease. As Director of Communications she is responsible for communicating information about GMCA’s workshops and events amongst graduate students and postdoctoral fellows using various social media platforms. In her spare time she plays competitive dodgeball and loves to run!





BrandonDirector of Education – Brandon Banaschewski

Brandon Banaschewski is a PhD student at the University of Western Ontario, who’s research focuses on antibiotic resistant bacteria, and the development of novel therapeutics to treat multi-drug resistant respiratory infections. As Director of Education, Brandon is responsible for liaising with academic and industry mentors and case development for GMCA Western.
